Inovio has developed proprietary technology for delivery of plasmids into skeletal muscle cells and skin, and have licensed this technology to VGX™ Animal Health for our GHRH and DNA Vaccination programs. This unique technology optimizes plasmid uptake and subsequent expression by adapting an applied electric field strength real-time to sense the tissue micro-environment. This results in uniform expression of the target protein across the injected muscle fiber(s) with minimal or no tissue damage. Clinically effective results have been achieved when plasmids with historically low expression levels are delivered with the cellectra® electroporation delivery device. VGX™ Animal Health has acquired a license to cellectra® for animal appllications.

VGX™ Animal Health also has access under the license agreements with Inovio to an impressive toolbox of muscle specific promoters, ensuring that the target protein of interest is expressed only in the muscle fibers. This is an important consideration for the development of DNA therapeutics and vaccines in that it introduces an additional margin of safety in assessing unintended biodistribution and integration of the injected plasmid at sites/organs distal from the injection site.
